Ostomy Lifestyle Tips: Sleep Tight With an Ostomy

By Lisa Lurie

Tossing and turning, finding a comfy position for sleep happens to everyone at some time. For women with ostomies it can be even harder to find that sweet spot. Whether you are a back sleeper or prefer your side, here are some helpful tips to turn that rest-less night into a rest-ful sleep. Sweet Dreams!

Tips to keep Your Ostomy Pouch Snug and Secure

• Wear a tight- fitting shirt that will hold the ostomy pouch close to your body.

• Select stretchy pajama pants with a yoga style band or that ties. Make sure that the waistband is not too tight. Tuck the pouch into the pajama pants. Pregnancy pajamas with a wide band are an option.

• Keep the pouch close to your body with a belly band, intimacy wrap or ostomy belt.

Pillow Talk

• Place pillows in strategic spots for comfort and to support your pouch. There are ostomy pillows designed especially for sleeping support. In addition, many Ostomates find that a body or pregnancy pillow is another good choice. Experiment with different sizes and types of pillows to find what works best.

• Sleeping on your back or the side with your stoma is recommended because your pouch is supported by the bed. But if you prefer to sleep on the opposite side of your stoma and pouch, position a pillow next to your abdomen and set your pouch on the pillow.

Sleep Hygiene

• Sleep Hygiene is the practices and habits that lead to good sleep. They are essential to a getting restful, restorative sleep A few recommendations include, going to bed at a consistent time each night, keep your bedroom completely dark, and turn off the TV and screens one hour before sleep.

Nitey Night–Sleep Tight.
