This is a love story. A love story about two mothers, Gloria and Theresa. Their struggles with cancer and chronic illness inspired their daughters to support other patients and survivors. It is from passion and purpose that Cancer Be Glammed and Wrapped in Love were born.
My mother Gloria was the sunshine of our lives. (Hence her nickname Glo!) She raised three daughters— Janet, Ann and I with an abundance of love and heart. She had a wonderful outlook on life that was fueled by her contagious sense of humor. She was also a cancer survivor—twice. Kidney cancer and then years later lung cancer, which took her life.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer years later, I found myself tackling many of the same non-medical, lifestyle challenges that my mother had faced. These included a lack of information and practical support for the emotional and physical fallout from surgery and treatment like disfigurement, scars, hair loss, weight issues, skin problems and more. I had been frustrated and upset by my inability to help my mother to look and feel more like herself. Now I felt that way again, this time about me.
After treatment ended, I became determined to help other women coping with all forms of cancer, to have a well-informed, better prepared and life-made-easier recovery than my mother and I had. In honor of my mother, my beloved Glo, I co-founded Cancer Be Glammed, the first lifestyle company focused on educating and empowering women to recover with dignity, renewed self-esteem and personal style.
My company, Wrapped in Love, was inspired by my mom during her illness with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Pulmonary Fibrosis. In the hospital during her last Christmas, she told us that she didn’t want any visitors other than our immediate family because she was unhappy with how sick she looked. I knew that this would be her last Christmas with us but I still wanted it to be happy like in years past. I was determined to lift my mom’s spirits anyway that I could.
I went home from the hospital that night and decided that I would make her something that she could wear over her hospital gown to feel special and pretty. I created a makeshift wrap with a flower pin closure. (She loved flowers!) I brought it in on Christmas day, wrapped it around her over her gown, and helped her to put on a little makeup.
I soon saw that familiar smile again and I could see that she felt special. The nurses commented on how pretty she looked. They shared with me how important it is for patients to maintain their self-esteem during a serious illness. For many, it actually helps in the healing process.
That day was a game changer for me as I realized that I wanted to help others maintain their comfort, style and dignity during their illness. I founded my company Wrapped in Love, from the love that I had for my mom and the magic that was created by a simple wrap. Today I have created a clothing line for women for every phase of treatment and recovery. I know my mom is smiling down to see how she inspired me to help others going through the same thing.
In honor of our mothers, this Mother’s Day we have created two special gifts, The Theresa and The Gloria. The Theresa features a beautiful Floral Nightgown with a Matching Sleep Cap. The Gown is front closing with large easy-to-use buttons along with two interior pockets to help manage post-op drains. The Gloria has a chic jeweled head covering and statement socks letting that special mom know that she is, Wrapped In Love.
Our mothers enjoyed being comfy, stylish and outspoken (check out the statement socks!) Yours will too. For these great gifts and more, visit our gift collection. Remember to order early!
Happy Mother’s Day!
