When I was coping with cancer, it was often challenging enough to take a shower let alone get dressed for a special holiday event or occasion. Yet at the same time when I did add a little something extra to my outfit like a stylish scarf or dressed in clothes or colors that I loved, I looked (and felt) better. Fashionistas often throw around the phrase “Effortless Chic.” With an emphasis on effortless, here are some simple, get your holiday glam-on, style tips.
Recovery from surgery or coping with treatment side effects can be hard on skin and impacts appearance leaving most women looking pale and drawn. Opt for clothes with colors that warm skin tones and add richness to an outfit.
Jewel tones are a perfect choice. Named after gemstones, these colors are deeply saturated. Dress in emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, amethyst purple or citrine yellow. If you are a fan of grey, navy or brown select darker colored shades as opposed to lighter ones. Lighter colors can make skin look washed out.
Fabric choice is an important part of any outfit. CBG Rule #1: Never sacrifice comfort for style! Every fabric that touches your skin should be non-irritating, breathable and soft. Made from natural fibers–velvet, soft lace, silk, 100% cotton, linen or bamboo are ideal and add some texture and glam. Avoid clothing made from synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. Some types of wool can be itchy too.
Accessories are the heartbeat of “Effortless Chic “and essential to festive attire. They can express personal style, elevate your outfit from ordinary to extraordinary and complete your look. Fashionable accessories like colorful or patterned shoes, a statement belt, eye-catching jewelry or an elegant head scarf can be transforming.
Accessorize to add a pop of color, pattern or texture. And remember in this case “less is more.” Choose one or two accessories to avoid looking overdone. A favorite of ours is a great scarf that can be worn or tied many ways!
Holidays are about celebrations. Dig deep into your closet and bring out the sequins, sparkles, faux fur and bling. Experiment with different looks to wear what makes you feel happy and festive.
And finally, we recommend putting together a few outfits with pieces that mix and match that can be worn for any holiday occasion. Prepare ahead of time (as you feel up to it) to avoid last minute chaos and stress.
